The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。宜兰青年林育信曾经在体操队度过了快乐的少年时代，那时活泼好动的小阿信拥有出色的天分而颇得教练器重，但年岁渐长，阿信先天的长短脚令他的体操水平难以提高，又拗不过开水果铺的母亲要求，只得终止训练卖水果，并与好友菜脯日日在街头和各路人马拼斗，并因此结缘为他传递打杀通知的电话秘书559。为了替昔日体操队友的摊档出头，阿信和菜脯开罪黑道大哥之子木瓜，并连番让木瓜出丑，木瓜诱使菜脯吸毒，为阿信设下陷阱，结果反被菜脯重伤。阿信和菜脯只得远赴台北躲祸，少年时的体操梦，此时已变得模糊不清……。主人公尼玛将亲生母亲碾压致死，无法抑制内心的悲痛和自责，带着渗有母亲血迹的一把黄土，只身磕着等身长头朝拜拉萨，却依然没有消解无时不在的悲痛和自责。返程途中，尼玛遇见一位坦荡执着、又空虚失落的老者，两人穿行在茫茫戈壁滩，相互影响，相互救赎，终于让主人公重新获得生存的勇气和自我的释然， 将渗有母亲血迹的黄土撒在原来酿成惨剧的地方。。
